Description

...Suddenly, caught by the level beams, Frodo saw the old king's head: it was lying rolled away by the roadside. "Look, Sam!" he cried, startled into speech. "Look! The king has got a crown again! ...They cannot conquer forever!"

This is one of my favourite parts of the story, an iconic image for me if you will. It is also one that I apparently did not read very carefully before drawing this picture. I never realised that this took place in a wood.

Tolkien has a way of making you think before you understand...... if that makes sense at all... heh, well, I love history and his trilogy is CHALK FULL of references. During the time that Lord of the Rings was being written, the World Wars were taking place. Of course, you have the orc's language, it's a rough language quite similarly to German. (I'm German so don't deem I take offense) Then we have Salron the Dark Lord who threatens all mankind and is hunting desperately for the ring. Well, during the World War, Adolf Hitler obviously threatened the world AND he and his buddies were bent on finding the arch of the covenant.... of course... he never did... but we didn't destroy it either! haha Then you have the elves with their graceful language and such and man and the dwarves. Well, if you recall, Gondor and Rohan each had orcs on their doorstep, Isengard and Mordor, just as many of the countries did. Gondor, like Great Britian was the greatest power but was having monarch issues. Now, France was nearly destroyed by Nazi Germany, just as the dwarves were occupied with their own wars, unable to aid the others. But that didn't mean France didn't fight and obviously Gimli is a dwarf. Then we have the elves, coming only to pay their respects to the past alliances with man and really because of Legolas's presence there, like the USA. Anyways, thus ends my random historical parallel to Lord of the Rings and World War 2. ;3
